The Zine
Challenge

	The Future Happened education initiative is a program for youth designed to spark an understanding of the vital roles that music plays in our lives, and how art acts as a door to these ideas.&nbsp;

The program encourages participants to explore and utilize their creative capacity for visual storytelling through the design process of making a zine. The initiative encourages participants to construct art that they can feel that they are a part of by reflecting on their culture, emotions and stories. Through the process of zine making, we hope young adults learn the fundamentals of visual communication which allows for self expression, empathy, the understanding of others, and a greater sense of community, in addition to the fun of sharing through creativity.

	Zine
Inspiration

	The Future Happened Zine Challenge examines the most fundamental utilities of music, how it can reflect our emotions, alter our emotions, reflect our histories and hopes. Building on this understanding, participants explore what it means to use visual art to describe music, how music is expressed visually, and how this relationship can help us form deeper connections to the power of music and what it represents. During the creation process, participants are encouraged to draw inspiration from contemporary and loved historical examples of zines. We hope that The Future Happened exhibit allows participants to reflect on the works of those who have boldly celebrated being different, and how the differences between us can dissolve when we learn through sharing that we aren't as alone as we might think. More importantly, we hope that the creative freedom and expression offered by the zine format encourages a deeper introspection for each participant and the issues and events that matter to them the most. Zines have the power to reflect the energy of entire movements of people, places and communities. We urge participants to look into the video and zine examples provided here and do more research into local zines in your area or famous zines throughout history.

	Zine
Guide

	The Future Happened Zine Guide provides more information on how to begin the process of making your own zine. The questions proviced by this comprehensive guide can help uncover subject matter for your zine. Sometimes starting is the hardest part, so we encourage participants to think about topics, issues, people or events that inspire you. You can also get started by thinking about which materials you would want to work with whether it be physical crafts or digital design tools you might want to learn. Most importantly, remember to have fun!&nbsp;

	About the Exhibit
Written by Sarah Panzer

	The Future Happened is an exhibition that examines how design and art deepens our relationship with music.&nbsp;Exploring how design can be key in sharing our stories and amplifying our power to make a difference in the world. Examining innovation and technology that enhances connections and opens doors, reinforcing our capacity to spark change.We live in an exhausting cycle of consumption, challenging news headlines, and tumultuous politics, all of which make it easy to slip into passive acceptance of the status quo.&nbsp; But, alongside this narrative, artists and innovators are vying for our attention, hoping for their visions to be realized, their voices heard, and their work admired. The change these artists and innovators can bring may happen slowly or all at once, but it is already underway.&nbsp; The future is here—waiting to be uncovered.An exhibition that centers on creatives who invent new realities through design and music, The Future Happened dives into everything from the origins of the LP covers that your parents loved to augmented reality audio production. Rooted in Atlanta, the exhibit charts the city’s vast sphere of influence — from local to interstellar — while also highlighting individuals and communities from around the globe. Examining innovation in design and technology that deepens our relationship with music, we open our eyes to new and radical narratives that have the power to transform our ways of being in the world.
The Future Happened
First, some history. With the advent of streaming and digital media in the past 20 years, the ways in which we consume, share, and experience have shifted dramatically; and not only have our connections changed, as have the relationships of musicians to their work. Once standard methods of creating and performing have been reformed. Success is no longer gauged from album sales, but streaming statistics, leading to a massive transformation in the music industry’s function. Today, over 1 billion people use YouTube solely for streaming music, not to mention the hundreds of millions of users on streaming platforms such as Spotify, Tencent, Pandora, or Apple Music (Music Ally). As algorithms in these systems adjust to listener’s habits, so must musicians adjust to find profit. According to a 2014 distillation of Spotify data, there is a 35% likelihood that a user will skip a song within the first 30 seconds (Lamere); and because artists only get paid for streams over 30 seconds, this has incentivized shortened intros and prompt lyrical introductions. Music festivals have expanded to virtual experiences, artists live stream concerts via social media, and ticket sales (both virtual and in-person) help fund social justice movements.
Under the surface, distribution networks have moved online, financial models have been converted, and analog music production has become digitized. On streaming platforms, although it seems we are left to our own devices, we are often fed recommendations and playlists based on algorithmic interpretations of our listening habits. This shift to personalized music insight and discovery can be largely beneficial for the individual consumer and successful independent artist. However, it also leads to a decline in identity; for example, like-minded artists are less often grouped together through a label. And despite the many downsides of labels, it is in part thanks to these groups that we’ve seen the emergence of small pockets of culture, exploration, and innovation in the music space.
One invisible factor has not changed—who gets paid and who does not. Even as the internet makes it easier and easier to become an independent musician, major labels still dominate the charts and collect a hefty profit. On top of this, streaming platforms collect a cut of the returns. Artists, who were formerly compensated per individual track sold rather than streamed, yet need the label’s access to status, are left with little profit.There have always been problems with inclusion, diversity, and equity in the music industry. It’s in these issues we find ourselves turning to listen to those most affected by it—the artists and musicians themselves. We want to learn—how can we break down exclusionary barriers and how can we rectify equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the music industry? How has the shift to algorithmic discovery continued to perpetuate pre-existing biases in who is allowed to be successful? How has our agency and ability to freely discover new artists changed their opportunities since the advent of streaming? With these questions in mind, we also look to how design shapes our interactions with music. How can design be used to open the doors to accessibility? How do we engage different audiences, different communities, through the coalescence of music and design? How does this union bring power and strength to change?
The Future Happened was organized to give voice to this power and the movements within this community, and to bring attention to issues that we unavoidably face as time and innovation continue forward. The exhibit explores the vast capabilities of music and design, from its ability to change and preserve culture, inspire protest, empower and heal communities and individuals, facilitate reflection and reimagination of the past, and to bring us forward into the future.Welcome.
We are so excited to show you what you’ve missed.

	With new information catapulted at us in perpetually evolving forms, our well-being is constantly being pushed to the side. Undermined by the things we are convinced we should be doing or needing, we forego our soft inner-selves. A pick-me-up for tired times, these artists help remind us that within each person is a healthy core which, through the contemplation and creation of art, can be brought to the light.

Of Yoruba descent, Caribbean-Belgian artist Charlotte Adigéry is full of brilliant ideas and an aesthetic sensibility that is at once playful and heavy. Adigéry’s songwriting spans topics from synthetic hair to reptiles and further out, but is typically unified by her exploration of identity and the politics of the body.&nbsp;
Sometimes singing in English other times in French and recently in Creole, Adigéry's music is about delivery and personality, which can be cloying and sarcastic at the same time that is invested in healing and bringing peace to the listener. &nbsp;
<img width="600" height="600" width_o="600" height_o="600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7f8733dfdedc0b0cbd6ed946d91e6c86e978d12c0db4759220ee45087714fd7d/MAIN-IMAGE_Charlotte-Adigry_ZandoliEPpackshot.jpg" data-mid="103993417" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/600/i/7f8733dfdedc0b0cbd6ed946d91e6c86e978d12c0db4759220ee45087714fd7d/MAIN-IMAGE_Charlotte-Adigry_ZandoliEPpackshot.jpg" />

	She is an artist for DEEWEE studios, a Belgium-based label founded and run by the Dewaele brothers aka Soulwax aka 2manydj's. When she signed onto their label, the Dewaele brothers paired her with Bolis Pupul. The pair hit it off and since then perform and record nearly everything together, including her self-titled debut EP, Zandoli EP, the Yin Yang Self-Meditation and most recent project Bear With Me (and I’ll stand bare before you).
Adigéry's visual persona draws a lot on African-American Drag and Ballroom culture, with her love of wigs inspiring the song High Lights, an unbelievably catchy tune about her obsession. The song was released with four others under an album cover that features a design style like a mix between a barbershop advertisement and a digital portrait, at once sweet and pop. On Yin Yang Self-Meditation however, Adigéry adopts a different style, more serious and psychedelic, a cross between a club space in monochrome lights and a dim performance art space. And the piece is the latter at the same time that it is a guided meditation in which Adigéry divulges all the anxieties and fears she has, related to her ethnicity, her gender, her body, her experience as a performer. And then she reminds herself, and the listener, that it is only a "mental interpretation," instructing herself to breathe and allow the body to let them go.

The piece is extremely powerful, intensely vulnerable, which endears the audience at the same time that it unnerves them. Additionally, the exercise ends with Adigéry prompting the listener to perform the same kind of meditation, to record their anxieties and breathe through them. Should the listener accept the invitation, and record the "B-side" of the track, as Adigéry says, they experience a deep catharsis, coming into an understanding of the body and returning to "the core" where one is safe. Adigéry is working as a healer at the same time that she is healing herself, making the work all the more profound.
